Burden Bearer

While I was loading the stroller with my lawn chair, Lauren's lawn chair, Kleenex for Austin's runny nose, my water "bottle" (yes it is my pitcher thing from the hospital!!), the camera, the video camera, the snack bag, my purse, and last but not least, the BABY in her car seat, to walk out to the kids' soccer fields at the high school, one of our friends happened to arrive with his family and saw us. He said, "Got your burden bearer, huh?" :D Perfect name for it, I would say!! Here it is:

Austin had his very first soccer game this morning at 10 am. All his games will be either at 9 or 10. There are 5 kids on each team, but only 4 play at a time. They play for 40 minutes total. The kids don't really have positions at this age. They mostly just play in a pack and try to defend their goal and kick goals for their team. Every now and then one runs ahead of the pack and scores! Or kicks the ball out of bounds. That happened frequently this morning too. But I have to say, it was the cutest thing ever to watch! Those little guys put their hearts into playing, that is for sure. Here is Austin defending the goal. He let the ball slip past once. But he wasn't the only one today. ;) His team scored 6 goals, and I am not sure how many the other team earned, it was close, though I think maybe 4-5? They don't officially keep score at this age either.

The kids agreed on names for their teams. Austin said his idea was the Blue Whales (which Brian said he did not bring up at team-naming time, he didn't suggest any name. I think he thought of it later). :D But I guess "Blue Sharks" got the most votes.

Here is our proud and happy #3 on the Blue Sharks! And eating his orange slices for snack at halftime with his buddy, Solomon. Solomon and Austin play soccer together at recess at school. They are not in the same class though. It is interesting to me how the boys play: does one of them start kicking around a soccer ball and the rest join in? And they suddenly are all friends? Yesterday when I picked him up to go to the dr., there was a whole group of boys playing soccer in the Kindy yard at recess.

Maybe I should call these two (below) Burden Bearers" also. Austin insisted on carrying the lawn chair across the field to the parking lot. He also insisted Lauren help him. When she had enough helping a short time later, he got quite upset. He still didn't want me to hang the chair on the stroller though! Finally the chair got too heavy for him, and he let me take it the rest of the way. Some other people walking said they thought it was a 1/4 mile walking from the parking lot all the way out to the soccer fields. It was a long way!

Caroline turned two months old Wednesday!

I did not plan their color-coordinated clothes. The girls often wear pink (like very often!), and Austin happened to be in navy. This was Caroline's third outfit of the day. The first two were pink. :D

Caroline with the bear she's going to be photographed with on her monthly birthdays. And the very next day she turned nine weeks (in the aqua pants), so had to photograph that too (in keeping with my weekly picture project with her).

Yesterday I took all the kids to the doctor. Caroline had her 2-month appointment. She weighed 11 lbs., 12 oz. (75th percentile) and was 23 1/2" long (95th percentile). The other kids had to get their last Hepatitis A vaccine. I think this is the third time we'd had it scheduled for them, but the other two dates (months ago) had to be cancelled b/c the vaccine was on back order. Austin went first and promptly burst into tears after his shot. Julia and Lauren returned from the bathroom just as he was getting a lollipop from the nurse, and neither of them even flinched! They got lollipops too. Caroline didn't make a peep after the first shot, but cried after the second.

Austin also had to be checked out b/c he's had a cold for the last 3 1/2 weeks, that he caught when we were in Colorado, and it still hasn't gotten better! The dr. said Austin's left ear was plugged, and it was starting to be a problem in his sinuses, and prescribed Amoxicillin for him. I am glad, as Austin coughs and coughs at night, and has had a very runny nose for all this time. There's snot on his pillowcase in the mornings, and it is just gross! Dr. also said Austin wasn't contagious at this point, which I'm sure is a good thing, as he's been in school for 3 weeks already!

Here is our little sweetheart after her shots:

And just a couple from this afternoon: We have our computer screen saver set to cycle through all the pictures saved on it, and the kids like to watch them. When Lauren sees a black-and-white picture, she says, disappointed, "Oh, there's a gray one. Those are bad pictures..." Almost like you'd describe a piece of rotten fruit or something that isn't as good as it should be!

Brian took Julia on a camping trip to Sequoia Nat'l Park this weekend. He picked her up early from school yesterday, and they are coming back Sunday evening. He was sad to be missing Austin's first soccer game, but really wanted to take Julia on a camping trip, before she doesn't care about going with Daddy, he said. He plans to take each of the kids on a trip with just him and them when they are old enough. The air mattress he bought didn't fit in the little tent we have, so he returned it. They are both going to be sleeping in sleeping bags on foam mats on the ground! I think I'll take my bed, thank you very much!! ;) I am sure they are having a great time. Julia was SO excited to go!

Apple Pie and Awana

We had three kids start Awana tonight! Brian is a listener in Sparks again, and I am helping on Lauren's Cubbies team. Julia is quite the big kid and off to T&T (Truth and Training) now! We requested Julia's Sparks leader, Miss Patti, for Austin, as she is just the sweetest lady and her group fills up fast! Well. Austin got on Miss Patti's team, but he is the only Kindergartener and the only boy! There are seven girls in 1st and 2nd grade along with him. I asked him what he thought about being the only boy on the team, and he said, "Good." I don't think he's had a chance to consider it actually, it was such a whirlwind tonight. I told Brian, in about 10 years, he'd really say it was "good" being the only boy on a team with seven girls! ;) LOL

I wanted to get pictures of these two in their vests from last year's clubs, as I didn't have any with all the awards they'd earned. And I'm about to use the seam ripper to take all the patches off each vest, so Austin can use Julia's vest, and Lauren can use Austin's. We believe in recycling around here. ;) Seriously, I don't need duplicate Awana vests and bookbags sitting around the house! All the Cubbies' vests look the same, as they work together on their book sections, just doing one a week. But Julia's vest looked very different than most of the other 3rd year Sparkies, because of all the extra-credit books she'd finished. At the end of Awana last year, the Sparks director said they hadn't had a Sparkie do all what she did for several years. (We aren't proud or anything.... :D )

Lauren was SO excited to begin Cubbies. She's had her verses memorized (3 plus the Cubbies motto) since last week, and earned her book and vest tonight. She and I did indeed make an apple pie today, as mentioned in the last post. She told me tonight, as she peeked out the back patio door, "There are more apples! We can make another apple pie tomorrow!" I had to get a picture of her happy-faced stamped hands pressing the crust into the dish. She stamped her arm and both legs too this morning. (We didn't roll the crust b/c it is the kind you make with oil. I don't keep shortening in the house anymore, as I don't use it often enough and it got rancid.)

Stirring the sugar and spices into the apples. She ate quite a few of the sweetened apples, too!!

The finished product! We all enjoyed some tonight after Awana. Lauren and I had fun making the pie. She was so eager to help, and wanted to pour in the ingredients and mix all by herself.

Somehow this little peanut always manages to sneak in the posts. I guess I can talk about her and Awana, too. She comes along with me in Lauren's class. Caroline was very interested in the kids it seemed. Her eyes were wide open and focused on them much of the evening. She wouldn't look at me when I talked to her, just wanted to watch the kids! I just wonder what she all knows/understands at 2 months old!

Apple Pickers and the Baby

Yesterday afternoon the kids picked the apples from the Fugi tree. We had two planter boxes full, about the same as the Gravensteins! These are the most apples we've had so far, from these trees. We planted them the summer we moved in, four years ago. Yesterday Brian and I peeled and cored the last box of Gravensteins to make a big pot of applesauce. I was SO glad he helped! I hope to make an apple pie or crisp with some of the Fujis this week. Lauren wants to help, so I think that might be a good project for us while the bigger kids are at school.

Brian took a few pictures of me with Caroline before supper.

Lauren wanted her picture with the baby. I don't think Caroline liked being in the grass.
Back in the house she was happier. :)
She sure is a lucky girl to have such a doting big brother! He adores her, and every day after school he gives her a big hug. He tells her things like, "Your big brother is back from school!" or "How's my baby?"

First Haircut, The Sillies

I felt kind of bad about doing it, but those long pieces by Caroline's ears were starting to look straggly. So yesterday afternoon she got her first haircut. Lauren had her first haircut at about 2 months, too! It's funny, these newborn baby girls of mine with their wild, crazy hair!

Before:

After: I just trimmed it by her ears and blended in the sides. Brian says she looks like a boy now, with short hair! :( I don't know how much of a difference that makes, really. People ask me how old "he" is, even when she's in her pink carseat with beaded-socked feet sticking out. ;)

This Silly first: eating his after-school snack of chocolate pudding.

This one's not quite as silly as the others. Though she definitely has her moments!

And this one: Possibly the Silliest of them all. I don't know what she was dressing up as this time: for Mardi Gras? for a luau? for the Roaring Twenties? to be a baker?

The puppets were used in Julia's last choir musical play in the song, God's Child. Some of the lyrics:

I'm God's guy
I'm God's girl
When God's eyes search the world
He'll see His Spirit in me
God's guy
God's girl
God's child.

All the kids had the puppets, and during the parts about God's eyes and Him seeing, the kids showed the eye sides of the puppets. And during the God's guy/girl/child parts they turned the puppets to the face sides. Each choir member made their own kid faces, they all were different, and turned out really cute!

Peen Needles

I hate to post without a picture, but I haven't taken any today (Yet...maybe I'll add one later... :D ) But I want to remember this conversation.

I was walking back from school this morning, with Lauren and Caroline in the jogger stroller. Lauren had brought along her baby today, Julia's Baby Born doll that Lauren has renamed "Baby Maddy". Julia had named her Carissa at one point, but so much for that! Anyway. Lauren is chattering away, and then I hear her say, "Mommy, you get me some peen needles?" There are long, long pine needles all along the path we walk, so I gave her a few. Next I hear, "I'm putting them in my baby's eyes." I told Lauren, "Don't poke your baby's eyes!" She replied, "I'm not poking her eyes. I'm dust getting a sleepy crumb out of them." I'm not exactly sure why she needed a long pine needle to remove a [pretend] sleepy crumb, but so be it. Yesterday when Lauren asked for "peen needles" she fed them to Baby Maddy. That was kind of funny, seeing pine needle pieces in the doll's mouth!

Eight Weeks

This one was taken Tuesday, when we were playing after Caroline's nap.

The rest of the pictures are from this morning. She's 8 weeks old today! The dress kept bunching up, so off it came. ;) It was a hand-me-down we got when Julia was a baby--the year is on the tag, 1998. LOL That should make Daddy happy, using 10-year-old clothes we got for free, especially when I like to buy a few new things now and then. I tell him it all balances out. :D Wouldn't you agree, Caroline is one well-fed child?!

Awww..., there's a sweet smile!

All this visiting is making me tired, Mommy!

Caroline was given this bunny when I was still pregnant with her, from the Babyline lady who prayed for us.

Just a little different angle. Cute little baby nostrils. Hee hee... ;)

Ok, I've had enough of this!

Can we please move on to somehing new?!

This is more like it! (She was tired, and took a nice long nap in her vibrating bouncy seat. So funny what they do and don't like! She screams and cries when put in the swing, but somehow decided the vibrating bouncy is good.

This is going to be a busy busy afternoon for us, as will every Thursday for the next few months. Julia starts choir today in Arroyo Grande at 4. Austin has his first soccer practice at 4:45. If I were to do all this shuttling by myself, I would have to drive her up immediately after leaving the school parking lot. Drive him back down to practice, drive back up to get Julia from choir at 5, and then back down to get him from soccer. I figured it would cost about $10 in gas doing all that, not to mention not too much fun for the youngest two. Guess that's just the way it is... However! Brian is getting off work early, so he will be here after school and be able to take Austin to practice. His supervisor said he has no problem with Brian leaving early, if he puts in the time other times. Brian plans to go in early, I think. We are thankful they are flexible at his work!

I Love You, Prince

Today Lauren was dressing up in Julia's Disney princess costumes. Julia asked her if she was going to kiss the prince, and Lauren ran over to Brian, gave him a big hug, and said, "I wuv you, Pince!" Mmmmwah--followed by a big kiss. Here she is, dressed like Tinkerbell, or at least how she imagines Tinkerbell--not sure what's up with the stocking cap!

Brian got down Julia's 4T clothes from the attic today, so I could go through them to see what Lauren can use for Fall. Lauren found the ballet shoes in a box and conveniently added them to her dressup costume. While we were outside taking pictures of Tinkerbell, at one point she stood on a rock, and looking up at the sky, waved her wand and called out, "Hi Dod! (God)" She was quiet for a minute and then said, "I don't see Him. He's in Heaben." Then Tinkerbell went on to tell me that Dod would take us to Heaben too, and take away our sins. She's been asking recently where God is, and I've been telling her He's in Heaven, but also that the Holy Spirit is everywhere. It's always interesting to find out what she takes away from our conversations!

And the littlest. Looking a little irritated, which she was...

Getting more irritated. This was just before I put her in the swing, where she took a nap while we ate supper.
