Labor Day and Edible Art

On Labor Day we went to Morro Bay with Brian's mom. Sunday was SO hot--it got to 87 in the house, which Brian and I don't remember ever happening before. The highest temp. I remember indoors is 84, which isn't typical, either. Brian filled up the kids' pools, and we all went in them! I only walked/stood in the big pool, as I was in the middle of making our dinner. Anyway, another hot day was forecasted for Monday, so we decided to beat the heat and head to the beach. We didn't want to go to Pismo or Avila, being Labor Day weekend, with tons of tourists in the area. So we headed to Morro Bay. It was much cooler there! The fog was even sitting offshore, which was a welcome sight for me! It actually got a little cool as the fog moved in, as we were leaving. We had a picnic at a nice park. I think it was called Tideland Park or something like that. It had a cute ocean/nautical themed playground, with this ship, bouncy whales, seals and dolphins to climb on, posts to climb on, sand to dig in....




Lauren kept climbing up this ramp, then down into the ship, then back up the ramp and then over to the sand area where Austin was digging. Over and over again. There were no swings at this park, but Julia, the swing-lover, found a way to swing on the ship chains.


On our way home, we stopped at the Avila Valley Barn to get some fresh corn-on-the-cob for dinner. We all got ice cream at the little shop there. When we got home we were pleasantly surprised that it was "only" 79 in the house. Haha It was much better than 87!! And thankfully, it cooled down to 73 before we went to bed. That was the same temp it started at that morning. And now our weather is back to normal, it seems.


Julia found a picture/article in her Clubhouse Jr. magazine entitled "Edible Art". There were two recipes. One was for tortillas spread with cream cheese, then decorated with veggies to look like kaleidoscope designs. The other was for these decorated cream tarts. I told Julia we could make both recipes. And she told me, "I think we should only make the little pies." She wasn't too interested in the veggie recipe! ;) We went to Vons today while Julia was at school and got the ingredients so we could make these this afternoon. She mixed the pudding by herself, filled the tart shells by herself, and arranged the fruit pieces by herself. All the kids were excited about her "little pies", and each one of them ate all their supper so they could have one for dessert!
